free range managment
at 6 weeks of age, birds will attain 650-750 g body weight. these birds can be let out under free range conditions @ 20-30 birds per hous depending upon the area and natural feed base resource. the birds are let out for foraging during the day time while at night they are kept in shelter. provide clean drinking water ad libitum. the males can be sold after attaining minimum body weight.
feeding
Vanaraja under free range can easily pick up its food from from the backyard once it learns to scavenge in the fields. the needs for sdditional feed supplementation depend on the free area available for ranging. the broken or shell less eggs can be minimezed by supplementation of calcium sources (lime stone, shell grit, oyster shell, ect) @ 3-4/bird/ day.generally the birds can meet demand for protein from backyard scavenging. therefore, feeding the birds with the cereals (maize, ragi, jowar ,broken, rice, etc.) available is always beneficial for sustaining the production . for meat purpos feeding wih comercial broiler feed is recomded. if the purpose of rearing is egg production, the bird should largely depend on the feed available in the range. care should be taken to restrict the weght of the pullets(female) between 2.2 to 2.5 kg at 6.0 to 6.5 month of age. excess boady weight may reduced egg production
.
Health care
the most important disease that affects birds under free range condition is the new castle disease. under free range condition vanaraja should be vaccinated againts the new castle disease at 6 months interval, preferaly before summer. night shelter should have good ventilation, required light and protection from predators. the material used for night shelter such as wood and bamboo offers as good hidng place for external parasites. thereefore, periodic cleaning of night shelters is essential. since the chicks mve in free range, there is chance of parasite infestation for that deworming at 2-3 months is required.
